What is Social Emotional Learning?

There are many definitions of SEL in the education space, but we choose to follow the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), which promotes evidence-based social and emotional learning practices. Research shows SEL is foundational for academic and life success; this is why it is integral to Fusion’s holistic learning model.

SEL CASEL Framework

CASEL defines Social Emotional Learning as “how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” with five competencies:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-management
  • Social awareness
  • Relationship skills
  • Responsible decision-making

Social Emotional Learning in the Fusion Model

Fusion’s educational philosophy is Love, Motivate, Teach. Through our balanced 1-to-1 teaching and mentoring approach, and our Homework Café, teachers spend time getting to know each student and design the learning experience around them. Teachers see each student as an individual capable of succeeding, and when a student feels safe and cared for, they are more engaged in the learning process. At Fusion, students don’t just learn academics, they also learn about themselves.

Where Does Social Emotional Learning Occur?

1-to-1 Classes with Teacher/Mentors

In 1-to-1 classes, teachers support students’ self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making as it relates to their personal goals or as it arises in everyday sessions. Additionally, teachers spend time checking in with students during each session and build rapport over time. Students also have a Lead Teacher that serves as an additional layer of support.

The Homework Café

Homework Café spaces on each campus are led by the Director of Homework Café who is responsible for planning social programming around SEL themes and our School-wide Learner Outcomes. All activities are purposeful and provide students with opportunities for community connection and relationship-building.

In the Community

The Community Action Program is a campus-wide program that encourages students to be engaged community citizens. Students are required to participate in one Community Action Program event annually. It is designed to be student-led and the experiences emphasize SEL and engagement with challenges of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

SEL Curriculum at Fusion

Community Minds

In this course, students work 1-to-1 with a social coach to explore the complex dynamics of social learning. Students develop tangible skills for social interactions including: knowledge of social cues, navigating nuanced social interactions, how to build and maintain friendships, and how to recognize the impact their behavior has on others around them.

Wellness

In this course, Fusion students develop a stronger sense of wellbeing and healthy decision-making using four key disciplines: Emotional Wellness, Physical Wellness, Art Expression, and Music Expression.

Life Skills

This course develops a student’s ability to function in the three domains: Academic, Career, and Personal/Social. This curriculum builds character assets, which foster resiliency and personal growth, as well as prepares the student for their future success.

Student Outcomes and Goals

School-Wide Learner Outcomes

At Fusion, our School-wide Learner Outcomes (SLOs) describe the commitment we make to our students about their development. Each of these outcomes embrace SEL themes (independent critical thinking, compassion, resourcefulness, and emotional security) and are embedded into our curriculum and programming.

IROCs + Student-Led Goals

The Individual Reassessment of Commitment (IROC) process is one of the primary tools used to track student growth and goal attainment. Students are encouraged to create goals for themselves at the beginning of the year that align with our SLOs. Throughout the year, students are supported by their Lead Teacher as they reflect on these goals and demonstrate their progress.
